A green (vegetative) roof research Project has been initiated by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas.  This Project has been partially funded by a grant from the Roof Consultants Institute Foundation (RCIF).  Several roof manufactures and contractors have been asked to participate.

Austin averages approximately 33 inches yearly precipitation a year, and it is not unusual for extended dry conditions during summer months.

Green roofs will be compared with three "cool" (white reflective) roofs and three dark roofs.  Temperatures will be recorded at different locations within the roof assemblies and water that drains from the roofs will be measured.
